Review: “Revive” by Hands Like Houses

Hands Like Houses - This Ain't No Place for Animals

This isn’t a really review or a Caps Lock Classic or anything, just a song I wanna share with y’all. The original version of this song, “Introduced Species” off last year’s Unimagine, may very well be a CLC someday soon, but I wanted to share this version off the new “parallel” EP, Reimagine, because the lyrics are clearer, and they need to be heard.

“Revive” by Hands Like Houses

I stumbled across Hands Like Houses one day while listening to Spotify Radio last year, and the very first song I heard from them (“Lion Skin” – in itself a CLC) convinced me to give them a second glance. It was love at first listen. From vocals to instrumentation to message to lyrics, these Australian musicians can lay down a mean song.

The lyrics of this one happen to be particularly poignant.

And trust me, it sounds perfect here, but it sounds ten million times better on the original, “Introduced Species.”

In a way we are all connected, threaded together.
In a way we are all suspended, bound going nowhere.

Wake up, walk on the wires. Defeat and define.
Wake up, evolve and escape, untangle, unmake yourself.

We speak in tongues and we walk on the wires between,
We don’t belong here.
We are the sleeping sickness, the dancing dreams,
We don’t belong here.
We’re invaders from the inside; we’re survivors in silver skin.
Shapeless, we move, unwinding the wires between,
We don’t belong here.

So we’ll follow, follow down each knotless fathom to the end.
No more hollow, hollow sounds of echoes, echoes in our heads.

Wake up, walk on the wires. Connect and combine.
Wake up, react and reshape, unravel, unmake yourself.

It’s been a long, long night and we’re still learning how to survive.
Will you walk with me a while, and see a world with brand new eyes?
We see the signs and we’re fighting for our lives.
Will you run? Will you run? Will you run?

In a way we are all connected, threaded together.
In a way we are all suspended…

We speak in tongues and we walk on the wires between,
We don’t belong here.
We are the sleeping sickness, the dancing dreams,
We don’t belong here.
We’re invaders from the inside; we’re survivors in silver skin.
Shapeless, we move, unwinding the wires between,
We don’t belong here.
